Social Networking

I found an interesting article in the New York Times this morning about the Obama's and their close social network of lawyers, doctors and political allies that have spawned since the Obama's were back in college. You are obviously what you surround yourself with, and as I have been reading Outliers its made me look at the success of situations like this from a totally different perspective.

The Obama's like their close social network came from modest backgrounds, backgrounds that allowed the opportunities to pursue the type of careers they have become successful in. It also made me think about the civil rights movement and how this generation was the graduating class of those experiences. My mother for example who is in her late 50's, lived in D.C. when King was killed at the peak of the civil rights movement. You can imagine the since of purpose that was coming out of that generation directly effected by the civil rights movement. Education was a must, it was the direct conduit of change, the magical element their mother's and fathers weren't afforded the opportunity to. Yet their was a small group of African-American individuals who had enough intellectual wherewithal as well as the right kind of support systems (which is essential in the development of an individual) to succeed in fields that African-American's were up to that point almost non-existent.

In the article you can see the evidence of this, from where the Obama's lived to what their parents did to the minority they were in college. They are the generation just after my mother, those who were - as the article states - "too young to be in the civil rights movement." Where you come from, who you are surrounded by, your drive and intellectual level all obviously have an effect on your outcome of success. Yet understanding that in correlation to yourself to recognize your strong points can become a very integral part in understanding your power and help you define what success is for yourself.

Theme Music

I've been in a weird mood over the last couple of days. I think I am in the midst of some changes, perhaps the microcosmic experiences I am feeling are connected to a bigger picture. I.e. - new President, the country in dismay, the hopes for better times. Growth is a funny thing.

Anyhow through this process I've been listening to a lot of Kenna. He's one of the best musicians, song writers in the game in my opinion. Static above has been on literal repeat for a few days now. Sometimes that happens to me, certain songs fit a certain mood and they get put on repeat for days on end.

He also shot out Fre$h & Proper over on the FnP blog. Good look.

Check it out.

DO WORK!!!

Yup i'm going in and I don't know if I'll ever be back again. It's the end of the year folks. The end of fourth quarter, time to put your Jordan's on and do work! A lot going on right now, a lot on the bubble. Trying to push it up off my chest and get stronger through the process. Look forward to the change. I haven't been this inspired in a while. But I think you come to learn that inspiration doesn't come to you, "lucks not some mystical thing randomly bestowing people throughout the universe" says Jay Z. You create your own luck, your own karma. Some times its a hard thing to figure out, but once you go in and work hard for whatever it is you seek - its amazing the way things start to respond. Stay thirsty my friends.

Peace

Outlining Outliers

My homie Nelson (Big Like Giants, Thinkwell) put me on to this as he does most new ingenious things. Malcom Gladwell's new book Outliers. If your not familiar with Gladwell's work you should check out The Tipping Point, and Blink they will explain his ingenuity. If I can ever bring myself to writing something longer than a blog post, I hope I write for the reasons Gladwell does. He says he get's obsessed with these topics and in doing so can't stop learning about them - then out comes these amazing little thesis on whatever topics he's obsessed about. Did I say ingenious already. Check it out.

ELECTION DAY!!!

Election Day from Jamar Eaton on Vimeo.

Hot off the Press: Hillary Clinton possibly for Seceretary of State!!!

This could be interesting. After such a long insidious primary process this is a very interesting move by the Obama camp to let such a leak reach the press. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

What I'm Reading Right Now

It's been a long week, i'm tired as shit. A few more days of work then i'm off for a special little trip that I will fill in on more detail tomorrow. Until then - these are a few things I've been reading lately:

The Economist - A mix of business and politics, its a good read every now and then to catch up on current affairs. Obviously this issue was a must.

Walden - Henry David Thoreau was an American philosopher who believed in minimalism to the fullest. Shortly after graduating from college at Harvard he wrote this book. I've just started it and so far its been a great read. Thoreau has amazing perspective, that's relevant even today.

Machiavelli - Like most of you, all I knew of this name in high school was 2 Pac's last CD before he passed away. Machiavelli just happened to be an amazing political mind and philosopher. Just picked this up as well, looking forward to seeing what he has to talk about.

Buying In - This is a great branding/marketing disposition by Rob Walker of Murketing, Rob also has a column in the New York Times magazine every week that is definitely worth reading. He gives great insight into the reach of marketing and how it reflects with modern day consumers. A good read if your into branding, marketing and how they both reflect in current consumer culture.

More Amazing Coverage from the Trib.

The Chicago Tribune put together this little time lapse footage of last nights festivities. It was truly amazing to be apart of. If you are one of the many that weren't able to get a hold of the paper today click here, to order back issues online from the Tribune. And as for the New York Times - call 1(800) 543 5380, wait for about 30 minutes and you'll be able to purchase as many as 5 over the phone. Both options are definitely worth it to own a piece of history.

Do The Right Thing.

Obama's Campaign Manager

Over at the Fre$h & Proper blog on Friday July 7th, 2007. I wrote about David Plouffe and company. He quite possibly might be one of the greatest political minds of our time. Thank you Mr. Plouffe for making me right! Check it out...

I have a dream too.

I don't know if Dr. King's dream played out exactly like this in his head, but its amazing to be apart of a movement that he started. As I woke up this morning, I still can't believe it. Democracy by chance actually does work and its amazing to be living in Chicago at such a great time of change. Obama says so many amazing things in his acceptance speech, it's good to listen to again as this is his mission statement of sorts for what will be one of the most interesting Presidencies in the history of this country. Enjoy.

Defining Moments

Barack Hussein Obama, Presidential-Elect. Congratulations, you have redefined what it is to be American, you have redefined the political playing field and it was a joy to watch. This is just the beginning, a long road ahead. But I'm definitely looking forward to it. Somewhere I have to imagine Dr. King and the rest of those whom sacrificed their life for this moment are smiling. Cheers indeed.

Meet Me At The Mountain Top

The day has finally come. Some of us thought we might not ever get here. I listen to this speech from Dr. King Jr. from time to time, for inspiration, for remembrance and sometimes for the relevance that it cast on America's current affairs. Specifically the quote "the world is all messed up, the nation is sick." Perhaps somethings never change, as we have rolled through financial turmoil, war and the "old crony" Presidency in the last eight years. These affairs always seem to weigh heavy on the conscious of this country. Dr. King's civil rights movement does not even compare to the common struggle of many individuals currently however his plight for change is more relevant than ever.

As the world waits for history to make its self once again, I can think of no better words to turn to than these. The dream of Dr. King was not only his dream, not only the dream of African American's throughout the nation, but a fight for equality on many different fronts including the economic front for all races. Obama's ideology of change not only shares in that dream it builds upon it.

From the first sign of Obama running for President, through the primaries, and even now as the final day has approached us. I had a feeling Barack had a chance, primarily because of the team he had around him. People from outside the Washington "machine" with amazing understanding of media, especially the internet. How his oratory ability was such a grave contrast of President Bush in the fact that he actually knew how to speak to people. Last but not least after what we've gone through over the last eight years, he embodies what I think the future generations want out of their President. Multicultural, in touch with what's going on in the world from pop culture to political culture, from the ground up, from the top down. You can't help but take from Dr. King's vision, and in his closing words "We have some difficult days ahead, but it don't matter now because I have been to the mountain top...I might not get there with you but we as a people will get to the promise land!"

He might not be here with us, but his dream lives on. Barack Obama for President 08'. Economist's It's Time.

Listen to Dr. King's speech. Here.

My First 30 Miles

(The route via car - just as an idea for distance)

Jumped on the Bianchi today for a nice little Sunday ride, figured I would enjoy the amazing November weather - when's the last time it was 70 in November? Not really having a route planned, I just went with the flow. Started riding north from Logan Square ended up on Damen headed north, and just kept going. It was one of those, I wonder what's just passed the light, or I wonder what's up there, next thing you know I'm rolling into Evanston 15 miles later. This was my first ride like this, i'm normally not a distance rider - but have recently wanted to push myself to see how far I could go. Riding fixed makes things a little bit more interesting, I mean you can't stop peddling and there's no shifting gears to adjust with the terrain.

I stopped at the Barnes and Noble in Evanston to make a couple pick ups - you know The Economist, and a copy of The Prince by Machiavelli suggested by my roommate Nelson. Between leaving B & N, and trying to find my back I stopped at Turin, a bike shop in Evanston that happens to be a Bianchi dealer. Picked up the Bianchi 09 catalog, and a energy bar. They had a dope Pista Concept hanging in the window! Maybe a sign of things to come.

A little winded on the way back, I kind of had to retrace my steps, strolling through many a Chicago north side neighborhoods. Pushing into a head wind it wasn't easy, I had to work a little to find rhythm, and fight off the burn. Yet I will say it's amazing how much character this city has, something about that area just north reminds me of home back in Lansing, Mi. Crazy enough it ended up being one of the best rides I've ever experienced. There's nothing like a little adventure in the city, especially when you make some good literary pick ups and get to ride with a light jacket on in November! I was a little hurt I didn't bring my camera as it was a perfect day to shoot.

A little inspiration...

Before my Sunday ride...

Like-Minded

(via NYT)

My friend Amber put me on to this article today. It's an interesting perspective on networking, meeting new people and creating new business connections. You know we hate being "pitched" on anything, when's the last time you watched a commercial or came across an Ad and were like im going to buy that product. On the other hand when's the last time you went to an event "sponsored by" a certain brand that was y social and inviting and allowed you to participate in the brands message without feeling like they were shoving it down your throat. Well they do that for "networking" now too. Next thing you know you'll never be able to see it coming. Brands will be sold to you through the most enjoyable process ever and your favorite brands will give you everything you want seamlessly - wait they already do that. Check it out.

The New Cool

Chuck brought this to my attention early this month. I thought it was quite interesting to me as being a friend of both Mikey and Chuck since the beginning, I have watched their style progress. It was actually kind of refreshing to see them in suits and ties. Quite Fre$h & Proper indeed.

Complex Mag

Nike Commercial

One of the better Nike commercials in some time.

The Truth Will Set You Free

This is another one I posted on my Facebook a couple of weeks ago. You know just more socio-political propaganda, gotta love it. Enjoy.

Freedom

This is an amazing film by Aaron Russo, who also brought us Trading Places. The ideals discussed resonate so much with the current economic client in America, let alone the plight to keep the economic crisis going. I won't go too much in depth on this, as I feel its better for you to form your own opinion. One would only hope that once you are educated on such ideology, that the sentiments shared would be the same. Enjoy.

I had to post this too...

Enough socio-economic commentary after this. Is greed good? I was talking to a friend yesterday on the tele about this exact same subject. What do you think?

This seems fitting.

I'm watching CNBC - as everyone knows right now the finances of the world are on struggle. Too much supply, not enough demand. Nobody wants to give credit or ownership. The rich stay richer, the poor well you know. It's funny that people on the top of the food chain make some bad decisions based off of greed and everyone else pays for it - karma is bitch. With that being said don't you wish we could trade places at some point! If I remember correctly this movie takes place in Chicago on the futures market. Side-note: Eddie Murphy could do no wrong in the 80's. Word.

A little explanation.

Classics

Times are interesting, but style must persist. I will say I have definitely witnessed evidence of the downturn hand to hand. At Marc Jacobs here in Chicago with bags and accessories still holding down the fort - ready to wear has had a harder time jumping off the shelf. In this sort of economy where getting the bang out of your buck is essential, focusing on staples for the wardrobe that you will be able to wear for seasons on end is where its at. This post from Benjamin Ferencz (the co-creater behind Freeman's bikes) over at Selectism talks a bit about a classic piece that you can wear forever.

Think he found a little inspiration from here.

Heron x A-Ron : The Dons

I appreciate Heron for shit like this. A-Ron holds it down. Mind you this is pre-aNYthing. He has since sued aNYthing and moved on to what's going on bellow.

I hope this doesn't happen to you!!!

I just received my absentee ballot today as I will be voting in Michigan although I live in Chicago. I felt that it was more important to vote in Michigan considering the climate during the primaries. Yet Mccain has recently stopped campaigning in Michigan due to trailing Obama in recent polls. This by far will be the most important election in a lot of our lives, not just or peer groups. Hopefully what happen to Homer won't happen to you!!

Mash if you want to.

It's been a while since i've thrown something up, we just got the internet fixed and it looks like we're back in business. Ran into this today, a trailer of a video of Lance Armstrong riding with the Mash cat's in Austin, TX. Looked like a great ride. These cat's get busy - look at the rpm's there spinning, its nuts. They might not be professional but they definitely have come close to mastering the art of being on a fixed gear bike. Check it out.

Just Chill

Ashley runs this spot Chill in my hometown, Lansing Mi. Chill stands for Creating Hope in Lansing Lives. I was home recently for my birthday to chill with moms and pops, get a good home cooked meal and get ready for the next year. Normally I make it a point to get up wit Ash, politic see what she's doing, and draw a little inspiration. She briefly talked to me about CHILL, what she's doing with it, downtown Lansing and all things good and bad in the capitol city. Stay tuned for the video.

The Life & Times

My parents were in town the past week, its always dope to have them come to the city and show them around. Kicked it at the Hard Rock for a little bit for Lollapalooza festivities - its always nice to eat, drink and get free things - makes you feel special. Really looking forward to the next couple of weeks, we have a lot of good things on the agenda. Be on the look. Future Tycoon in training as my boy Heron would say. Ha.

NY state of grind.

I was in the dirty rotten last week for some business with the Fresh & Proper crew. We had a lot of fun but as usual it was an all day every day grind. I swear the city is a living breathing entity itself and everyone there is just plugged in. Capsule was dope, saw some good things for spring 09' - especially from the likes of Wood Wood & Shades of Griege. Project NY on the other hand wasn't that impressing although there were a few brands of interest but they were ruined by the likes of Ed Hardy. We did a lot of running around, politicking, networking and all out hustling. It was a great trip we got a lot done, and are working on a lot of good things to come. Here's some highlights from the trip.

Life & Times.

Anything Is Possible

A photo log of where I've been and where i'm going. An Alpha Romeo outside of work, djing, at the library with Nelson, back in the studio with the kids, and on the bike. The journey keeps right on going.

Fast Times

It seems like just yesterday we were just getting to Miami for WMC 07' with no plans, no shows booked, and not even a place to stay. A year and some month's later the homies just got back in from the UK tour and are now off to do Jimmy Kimmel with Justin Timberlake and Kim Kardashian Tomorrow. It's been a wild ride.

Obama Rolling Stones Cover

A year ago as Barack Obama was beginning the democratic primary process I wrote an article about the people behind his Presidential campaign, people I felt were going to be the difference between him and Hillary. Your only as good as the pieces around you and Obama picked one of the best teams in the history of Presidential races. The Rolling Stones article reaffirms those prediction's from almost a year ago to date and as this process continues Obama's "team" will be the difference between who wins and loses. See you in November.

Caught this over on Selectism today. Looks like a dope project. Check em out.

Fixed Gear

I've been watching the fixed gear movement for a minute. Living in the city you of course see a bunch of cat's riding without breaks. Obviously im thinking that's craze, how in the world do you stop! Being hit on a bike with breaks I never thought I would be riding without them.

I recently made the switch to Fixed and I have to be honest - it makes you more conscious of every move you make - almost making you a better rider. I hit my boy Ben from The Brilliance trying to catch some specs, price points, see what I should be looking for. I decided on the Pista its classic Bianchi material and so far its treated me well.

Fre$h & Proper Highlights

The kids and I threw a little shindig before they left for their European jaunt. It was good times great oldies, a lot of good people came out, and a lot of people drank 40's until they got kicked out. Everybody ripped it, definitely a night to remember. Thanks to Vapors and Dub Frequency for jumping down, and last but not least Empire for holding us down.
